Last Saturday, May 2, the seven-day shift of treatment of coronavirus patients was completed by the fourth therapeutic team of the Transcarpathian Regional Hospital named after Novak. This hospital became the second line after the Infectious diseases hospital, which created the so-called covid center on the basis of the surgical corps of thoracic surgery. During the week, 4 doctors, 6 nurses and 3 nurses were completely isolated in the department for the treatment of 31 patients with covid infection. The endocrinologist, head of the endocrinology department at the regional hospital Olga Oleksik was in the medical team and after the end of the shift told Uzhgorod.in about how doctors and patients live, fighting an unexplored virus so far.
- Our chief physician asked all doctors to join forces and show a desire to treat coronavirus patients. And we, 5 people from my department, decided to go as a team. Either we all go, or no one. Our decision was also influenced by the fact that among the patients at the center there were patients with diabetes mellitus, and they are at risk for Coronavirus infection.
Besides us, there was a surgeon with his team of nurses, there was a pulmonologist who led a team with nurses. The entire team included 4 doctors, 6 nurses and 3 nurses.
We had alternating shifts: at 4:00, and the cycle lasted 16 hours. That is, every fourth watch is yours. But in general, entering and going on duty takes you another 2:00 - an hour before entering and an hour after. It is very important to get out of this area correctly: proper undressing, proper sanitation of the entire suit. In general, there were 1.5 shifts per day. During the shift, 7 days, we had 10-11 shifts.
The work itself is not very difficult, but it is greatly complicated by staying in an anti-epidemic suit. A respirator, glasses, a visor, a fully sealed jumpsuit, a bathrobe on top, 2 pairs of gloves, shoe covers - and so you go on 4:00 duty.
Now there are 25 patients in the thoracic covid department (because there are 25 beds) and a sixth intensive care unit. They're all busy. They are released only when the patient dies or is discharged. In the second case, a person with negative PCR is transferred to the vascular surgery department, where she waits for the result of another PCR, and only then goes home. Repeated PCR tests are taken from patients constantly, every 3-4 days.
We don't always get the result we expect. The patients are difficult. The disease has not really been studied. This is not an ordinary pneumonia and it cannot be treated as pneumonia, which pulmonologists know well. She is completely different and the whole world does not know how to treat her ... We tried to fully adhere to the recommendations of international treatment protocols and observed significant improvement in some patients. And some of them were getting worse.
